The Great One
4 Stanley Cups • 9 Hart Trophies • NHL All-Time Leading Scorer
Wayne Douglas Gretzky, known as "The Great One," is widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time. Born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Gretzky revolutionized the game of ice hockey with his exceptional vision, creativity, and hockey IQ.
During his 20-year NHL career, Gretzky shattered nearly every offensive record in the books. His 894 goals and 1,963 assists for a total of 2,857 points remain the most dominant statistical achievements in professional hockey history.
Gretzky won four Stanley Cup championships with the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP nine times. He led the league in scoring eleven times and was named to the NHL All-Star team on 15 occasions.
After retiring in 1999, Gretzky became the first player to have his number (99) retired league-wide across all NHL teams. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately, with the customary three-year waiting period waived.
